David Copperfield:
the question nobody answered

The reason this belongs on this site has nothing to do with celebrity.

In 2007, two federal investigations were running in parallel — one into Epstein in Florida, one into Copperfield in Washington state — and agents in one office wrote to agents in the other proposing to examine whether the two men were connected in a specific and serious way.

That is the same year, and the same federal system, that produced the non-prosecution agreement. One investigation ended in a deal that immunised unnamed co-conspirators. The other was dropped. The question the memo raised was never answered in either.

What the files establish about the relationship itself is modest but not nothing. Epstein’s housekeeper testified he was a guest at the house on several occasions. His name appears on message pads seized from the property. The phone message system logged him as “Magic David.”

His lawyers say he “was not a friend of Jeffrey Epstein,” that they were “at most, acquaintances” who met a “handful” of times, and that any suggestion of closeness is “totally false.” Those two accounts do not sit easily together, and no court has ever weighed them.

The separate allegations against him are grave, numerous and unproven, and they are not an Epstein matter. In 2024 the Guardian published accounts from sixteen women alleging misconduct or assault across four decades — more than half saying they were under eighteen, two saying they were fifteen — followed by five more from a modelling competition. The reporting rested on interviews with over a hundred people. He denies all of it, and none of it has been tested.

This archive keeps those two things apart, and says so. Independent allegations are not evidence about Epstein, and appearing in Epstein’s files is not evidence for the independent allegations. Merging them would be the technique this site exists to identify.

What survives when you keep them apart is a single, narrow, unresolved thing. Federal agents identified a line of inquiry, put it in writing, named two witnesses — and it disappeared.

Copperfield is not the only illusionist in the files, and the pattern is worth naming carefully.

Reporting on the release describes Epstein as fascinated by magicians, and documents a years-long correspondence with David Blaine alongside the Copperfield material. In May 2015 Epstein asked Blaine to supply a letter supporting a US visa application for a woman whose name is redacted: “Would you feel comfortable sending something like the enclosed? I’d appreciate it.”

That request is the recognisable part. A visa needs a sponsor with standing. This archive documents the same structure through modelling agencies — a genuine document, genuinely signed, by someone with a reputation worth borrowing.

And in 2017, when Blaine faced a rape allegation reported by British authorities and later dropped, Epstein’s accountant forwarded the story to him with the words “Crazy world…” Less than two weeks later Epstein wrote to Blaine: “I’m there if you need anything.” It is not clear whether Blaine replied. Blaine denied the allegation at the time.

The honest reading of the magician material is not that illusionists are implicated as a class. It is that fame of a particular kind — wholesome, family-facing, associated with wonder rather than power — is unusually useful to someone assembling social proof.

Step three: use an intermediary with standing. A financier vouching for a man is a transaction. A magician who does television specials for children is something else entirely.

Which is also why the unanswered memo matters more here than it would elsewhere. The FBI had, in writing, a specific reason to look at exactly that overlap. Nobody did.
